The 1996-97 Topps Finest basketball set was issued in two series totaling 291 cards. The Series 1 set is divided into 3-tiers of collectibility, with each card also being arranged into individually designed theme sets - Gladiators, Maestros, Apprentices and Sterling. The Series 2 set is also divided into 3-tiers of collectibility with each card also being arranged into individually designed theme sets - Mainstays, Sterling, Heirs and Foundations.
Card numbers 7 and 134 do not exist. The Christian Laettner bronze, Patrick Ewing gold and Jeff Hornacek gold were all numbered 136. Card number 269 (Kobe Bryant Gold) is considered part of the gold set, while card number 289 (Shaquille O'Neal Silver) is considered part of the silver set, though they are both out of "set" order.
